This is a little early, but I figure there are a lot of Tor.com readers who live in the States who might step away from their computers for the weekend. I know! Crazy talk! But hey, as Thanksgiving arrives, many people in this country will be stuffing themselves with too much food, ignoring football on tv, and then sleeping the afternoon away never to return until Monday.
So this week we’re giving you a extra long weekend, and an extra bit of Getaway. We’re taking you to the Philippines. At that link, you’ll find the Philippine Speculative Fiction Sampler, edited by Charles Tan and Mia Tijam. From the website:
“[The] Philippine Speculative Fiction Sampler is a one-shot “virtual anthology” featuring speculative fiction stories in English by Filipino writers.”
My travels outside the United States are limited to places like Canada and Great Britain. Reading these stories gives me a rush of excitement, a desire to travel to somewhere completely different from where I grew up. For me, there’s a true sense of wonder to these stories as their settings are so unexpected for me. And yet, the stories are familiar, too. They’re about people, and their triumphs and failures.
Before you get wrapped up in holiday feasting, take a short trip to the Philippines. There’s a lot of exciting stuff happening there. And for everyone not in the States? There are 11 stories in this weekend getaway. I’m giving you a little more than normal, but I’m also posting earlier than normal. And if it’s a little quiet around here the next few days…know that those of us in the States are relaxing and giving thanks.
